She’s seen it all. Ms. Salamatu Imoru began his journey 18 years ago as a community health nurse, and by dint of determination, she’s now a public health Midwife at the Lawra Municipal Health Directorate in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

Throughout her practice, she’s realised how women and children in deprived communities are exposed to many preventable conditions.

“I’ve practiced for so long. I started in 2004. I started as a community health nurse, moved to be a midwife and then to a public health nurse.

“All these while, I’ve met many women and children. If you go to the communities, you’ll realise that the vulnerable people are the women and children,” she recounted.

“I’ve already pictured the differences I’m going to make” – Salamatu.

This experience has urged Salamatu to pursue an Mphil in Field Epidemiology and Applied Biostatistics which was made possible with Mastercard Health Collaborative.

“I believe that coming to do epidemiology will help me broaden my horizon on the issue of diseases and how to even prevent them,” she said.

“I don’t have the words to express how I feel about it. I’d always wanted to pursue a masters in Epidemiology but I didn’t know how I was going to fund it or go about it.

“I believe what really learning in Class will definitely have a great impact on my knowledge and skill and will definitely apply to the workplace, and I can already picture the differences I’m going to make,” she said.
