Programme Background Information
The proposed Health Communication programme is a 2-year diploma programme which seeks to provide opportunities for all who will meet the entry requirements including persons with disabilities to build their capacity in health communication. Health communication is crucial in creating awareness about health issues, changing attitudes and behaviours and generating demand for quality healthcare services. The proposed programme will contribute immensely towards the development of the personal skills of the Ghanaian population through the communication of accurate and reliable health information.
Aims of the Programme
The overall aim of the programme is to train and provide trainees with the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitude to design, implement and evaluate health communication interventions to positively influence the health-related decisions and behaviours of individuals, groups, and communities and subsequently improve health and well-being.
Objectives of the programme
The objectives of the programme are to train health cadres who shall be able to:
- Assess the health needs and assets of individuals, groups and communities
- Communicate health messages effectively using multiple but complementary strategies to influence the knowledge, attitude, and behaviour of individuals, groups, and communities.
- Apply basic health communication principles in the design of health messages.
- Assess the health communication needs and resources of individuals, groups, organizations, and communities.
- Contribute to the development of communication materials such as leaflets, brochures, and posters among others.
- Serve as an advocate for community health enhancement at the community level.
- Effectively engage communities to obtain their active participation in health communication programmes.
- Contribute to the facilitation of communication among individuals, groups, and organisations.
Admission And Progression Requirements
- The minimum requirements for entry into the Diploma in Health Communication shall be in accordance with the requirement specified and stated on the KNUST website or printed handbook as well as in the Statute and Regulations for Diploma in KNUST.
- The minimum requirement for prospective students into the Diploma in Health Communication programme shall be a completion of secondary education or equivalent, with the required passes. The following are acceptable passes required:
A. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS
- An applicant for admission to a diploma programme in the University must have CREDIT passes (A1 - C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in the THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies), and CREDIT passes in THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Elective Subjects or its equivalent relevant to the chosen programme with aggregate 24 or better.
B. GCE/IGCSE (CAMBRIDGE) ‘A’ & ‘O’LEVEL/MATURE APPLICANTS
- Holders of GCE/IGCSE must have FIVE credits at the ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics (or its approved equivalent), plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level/Three Credits in the case of mature applicants (age 25 at the time of admission). In addition, the applicant must fulfil the appropriate College, Faculty and Departmental requirements.
C. GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (GBCE)/ADVANCED
Business Certificate Examination (ABCE)
- ABCE and GBCE are both needed to qualify an applicant for a programme. Holders of GBCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in THREE Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics. Holders of ABCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects plus THREE (3) Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.
D. MATURE APPLICANTS
Mature Applicant must be 25 years at the time of admission and should have the following:
- ABCE and GBCE are both needed to qualify an applicant for a programme. Holders of GBCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in THREE Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics. Holders of ABCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects plus THREE (3) Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.
- a) Certificate Applicants: Certificate in relevant health or related fields. OR
- b) Must satisfy the requirements for WASSCE OR ‘A’ Level (NB: Short-listed applicants must pass an entrance interview).
- Candidates may write an entrance examination and if necessary, must attend and pass an interview conducted by the Department of Health Promotion and Disability Studies.
- Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Persons with disability are highly encouraged to apply.
Duration
The duration of the programme shall be 2 years.
NB: The programme is hosted by the Department of Health Promotion and Disability Studies, KNUST, Kumasi.

Only candidates who meet the minimum admission requirements of the programme and the Mastercard Foundation Africa Health Collaborative’s Scholarship criteria will be notified of the results of their application.
