Programme Background Information
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Allied Health Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field of medical laboratory science. The programme covers a wide range of subjects, including haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics. Students will learn about laboratory techniques and procedures, as well as the underlying principles and theories behind them. They will also gain practical experience through hands-on laboratory work and clinical placements, where they will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Aims of the Programme
This programme aims to train Medical Laboratory Technologists qualified to perform and aid in the efficient processing, analysis, interpretation and reporting of laboratory test results to support clinical technical services in the provision of holistic healthcare.
Objectives of the programme
The objectives of the programme are to train health cadres who shall be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge in medical laboratory science equivalent to a Diploma holder.
- Develop skills in performing medical laboratory tests as laid down in the various laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Develop skills to accurately and safely use laboratory equipment.
- Develop skills to be able to carry out routine maintenance and performance checks on laboratory equipment under minimal supervision.
- Develop ability in the use of laboratory information systems for data management in accordance with authorised protocols.
- Develop skills to be able to maintain effective communication with colleague health professionals and clients.
Admission And Progression Requirements
- The minimum requirements for entry into the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science shall be in accordance with the requirement specified and stated on the KNUST website or printed handbook as well as in the Statute and Regulations for Diploma in KNUST.
- Credit passes (A1-C6 in WASSCE and A-D in SSSCE) in English Language, Integrated Science and Core Mathematics; and any three (3) elective subjects (Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
- Holders of GCE/IGCSE must have five credits at the O Level including English Language and Mathematics (or its equivalent), plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level/ Three Credits in the case of mature applicants.
- Mature applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of admission and must possess either five credits at GCE O-Level including English language and Mathematics and at least two passes at the A-level (excluding general paper) in the General Science programme (Chemistry, Biology, Physics/elective mathematics) and must pass Departmental interview.
- Candidates may write an entrance examination and if necessary, must attend and pass an interview conducted by the Department responsible for the programme.
- Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English.
- All applicants would need to pass an interview conducted by the Department before admission.

Duration
The duration of the programme shall be 3 years.
NB: The programme is hosted by the Department of Medical Diagnostics, KNUST, Kumasi.
